You can browse the available firmware builds any time, but downloading requires a donation. A donation gives you access to all nightly builds and the firmware builder for 12 months.
The donation covers the costs / service of building the firmware nightly, as well as distribution to fellow 3D printing enthusiasts. It also covers donations to active Marlin developers via GitHub's Sponsorship Program, and can also cover purchasing hardware or parts for developers to improve compatibility with Marlin.
Please note that this service is provided to benefit the 3D printing community as a hobby. It is not a commercial entity, nor a business. As such, everything is provided on a best-effort basis. If you do get stuck, I try to help out the best I can via the forums
You are free to download the latest source code of Marlin and build it yourself for free with no charge. Marlin is licensed under the GPLv3 and you are free to build and use it under the conditions stated in the GPLv3.
